Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef round steak (top round or sirloin)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Pound the beef round steak to about 1/4 inch thickness for tenderness.
  2. In a bowl, combine buttermilk with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Soak each steak in this mixture for at least one hour.
  3. Set up a breading station with seasoned flour in one bowl and beaten eggs in another.
  4. Coat each soaked steak first in flour, then dip into the egg mixture, followed by another layer of flour.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Fry each steak for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. For the gravy, drain excess oil from the skillet, leaving about two tablespoons. Melt butter, then stir in flour to make a roux before whisking in milk until thickened.
