  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk with vinegar)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry mixture; add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix gently until just combined.
  4. Fold in chocolate chips carefully.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. A toothpick should come out clean when inserted into the center.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
