Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (100°F to 110°F)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • ½ cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 4 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and stir to form a rough dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into about eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes and twist into pretzel shapes.
  6. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Boil water with baking soda in a large pot; dip each pretzel for about 30 seconds before placing them on a lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  7. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter after baking.
